The Tercentenary of the Summer Garden

The year 2004 is the tercentenary of the Summer Garden v a masterpiece of landscape architecture, unique historical monument and one of the main symbols of St Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great. On 16 December 2002, the Summer Garden became a part of the State Russian Museum complex. In the summer of the anniversary year, the museum prepared an extensive jubilee programme. The festive events were aimed at a very wide range of visitors v grown-ups and children; those who like classical music and those who prefer modern art; elderly visitors, for whom the Summer Garden has always been a favourite walking place, and young people who enjoy the special atmosphere of this wonderful place.

As part of the tercentenary celebrations, the State Russian Museum has organised various programmes in the Summer Garden, aimed at supporting the existing cultural traditions and creating new ones.

The Summer Garden also celebrated its tercentenary with large-scale festive events devoted both to the jubilee itself and to separate forms of art, as a synthesis of arts is strongly connected to the image of the Summer Garden and its culture and history.

The summer programme, with its concerts, festivals and other events, not only delighted the people of St Petersburg and the guests of the city; it also drew the attention of the public and business circles to the Summer Garden v the first park in St Petersburg.

Among those who helped to organise the Summer Garden tercentenary festivities were the North-West Branch of the Sberbank of Russia (general sponsor of the celebrations), the Foundation for the Reconstruction of the Palaces of the State Russian Museum, the Friends of the Russian Museum International Society and Profil magazine.
