Democritus (c. 460-370 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher, the founder of the atomic theory. He thought that there were only atoms and vacuums in the world. He saw the aim of cognition in reaching the spiritual calmness and moral pleasure devoid of passion. Traditionally, Democritus is depicted laughing.
