Diogenes. Sculptural bust

H. Marinali. Early 18th century
Diogenes is an ancient Greek philosopher (about 404-323 BC), the most famous representative of the cynic school. He expressed his philosophy in his way of life, rejecting any earthly needs. He was also known for his caustic replies, and the sculpture-s face is the face of a person, attentive and ready to make a caustic remark on hearing words of any interlocutor. The philosopher is shown with a naked shoulder, not covered with his dress tied up with a lace. Probably, this hints at him wearing rags.
