The collection of graphics of the State Russian Museum numbers over 200000 items (including about 120000 original drawing and 85000 prints as well as the unique collection of copper and wooden printing boards of the XVIII-XX centuries). The collection of graphics ranks with the world largest collections of national art and forms the basis for scientific and research work.

Nevertheless the growth of the collection of graphics within the last decades began to hinder the functioning of the department and implementation to life of many of its interesting exhibition projects.

The necessity to ensure the proper level of preservation and security of the unique exhibits gave birth to the idea of establishing the centre of graphic art that will facilitate a wide access to the richest collection that had been hidden till now from the viewers.

The programme envisages the creation of a single complex combining the funds of the original and printed graphics, the workshops for the restoration of graphics provided with the up to date equipment, the library, the exhibition halls arranged for display of graphic material and the printing workshops.
