The Russian Museum was the first art museum of our country to introduce folk art as an equal in rights integral part of our national heritage. First permanent exhibition of folk art opened in Russia in 1950. Now this branch of Russian culture and art enjoys great popularity with the visitors. It also plays an important role in aesthetic and patriotic education of children and youth. The depositaries of folk art number 45000 items of different types of handicraft: wood-carving and painting on wood, bone-carving, ceramics, methods of artistic processing of metal, folk toys made of different materials, weaving, printed cloths, embroidery, lace, knitting and carpet-making.

Presently the rooms of the Rossi Pavilion house a temporary exposition of folk art. Three halls are used as storage rooms while the functioning exhibition halls are equipped with devices made in mid-1960s. Certainly the equipment is obsolete and outdated. The present exhibition is arranged according to the types of folk art and not in chronological order unlike the main bulk of the museum exhibitions. All this necessitates the creation of a new permanent exposition of folk art corresponding to the modern level of research and in conformity with new standards of design and equipment.
