The Russian Museum

Goal: to open up new and unusual for the museum spaces and to create landscape services of the museum.

Restoration and museumfication of the Russian Museum gardens will attach importance to its buildings - monuments as elements of volume and space composition of the city historical center. In limits of the created by the museum reserved zone we planned organization of summer cafes, prefabricated grounds for mass cultural and entertainment arrangements, temporary exhibitions, souvenir and information stands that will throw light on exposition and exhibition activity of the museum.

Transferred to the Russian Museum in 1998 the Mikhailovsky garden, Engineers' garden and green territories of the Michael's (Engineers') Castle form he united historical and cultural ensemble that has formed in the first third of the 18th century.

The Mikhailovsky Garden area makes up 87186 sq. m. (8,72 hectares), the Engineers' garden area makes up 16533 sq. m. (1,65 hectares) and the Michael's (Engineers') Castle green territories are 12796 sq. m. (1,28 hectares).

Besides the complex includes:

  • The main yard of the Mikhailovsky Palace (court d'honeur) - area 7066 sq. m. (0,71 hectares)
  • The Marble Palace garden - area 3718 sq. m. (0,37 hectares)
  • The Stroganov Palace garden - area 1520,5 sq. m. (0,15 hectares)
  • Covered yards of the Mikhailovsky Palace - area 294,2 sq. m. (0,03 hectares)
  • The Farm Pavilion garden (Pavlovsk, rest base) - area 4500 sq. m. (0,45 hectares)

Total square 133611,9 sq. m. (13,36 hectares)

Management of the Russian Museum Gardens

It is necessary to create the Russian Museum Gardens' management to provide keeping of the gardens' territory, controlling reconstruction, using gardens for sculpture exposition, and organizing musical concerts in the Rossi Pavilion.

    Tasks of the Management are the follwing:
  • territory and plants maintenance;
  • organization of contemporary sculpture exhibition, its upkeep and renewal;
  • organization and supply of cultural events;
  • organization of musical concerts.
    In the Management staff should be:
  • scientific workers and curators - 3,
  • specialists on garden holding and planting - 2,
  • technical workers - 13.

The Gardens' Management should be provided with technics for planting and excavations carrying out (cultivators, trimmers etc.).
