The spire of the church of the Michael 's Castle is one of the central high-altitude dominants in the historical centre of St Petersburg. The total height of the church is 30 sazhens (63.9 m), whilst that of the spire is 10 sazhens (21.1 m).

Back in the nineteenth century the castle's gilded spire could be seen from any point in the town. At the present time it is in the state of collapse and requires major repairs. Surface inspection has been carried out and the method of restoration resolved.

The programme of restoration of the spire:

involves the erection of scaffolding for high-level work, stripping down the building structures, their detailed inspection and treatment, substitution or complete replacement of the damaged edifices.
