Reconstruction of the sculptures on the Main Staircase
In 1801 the Emperor Paul placed marble sculptures in the bays of the Main Staircase. A marble copy of the statue of Cleopatra from the Capitol Museum stood in the central bay, with representations of Caution and Justice in the side bays.
The sculptures have survived and are currently part of the collection of the State Hermitage, standing on the Ambassador's Staircase in the Winter Palace.
